Hurricane Hazel was the deadliest and costliest hurricaneof the 1954 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm killed as many as 1,000 people in Haiti before striking the United States near the border between North and South Carolina, as a Category 4 hurricane. After causing 95 fatalities in the US, Hazel struck Canada as an extra tropical storm, raising the death toll by 81 people, mostly in Toronto. As a result of its damaging effects and high death toll, its name was retired from use for North Atlantic hurricanes.

The elements can kill you before you starve. Emergency shelter should be part of your survival kit items. Traveling in winter? An emergency blanket or emergency sleeping bag will prepare you for survival. The emergency poncho will keep you dry.

1959 Ohio. Rains of 3 to 6 inches fell on snow covered frozen ground, producing the most destructive flooding in Ohio since March 1913. All streams reached flood stage from January 21 to 24, killing 16 people, forcing 49,000 from their homes, and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses, roads, and bridges. Classic winter flood conditions existed across Ohio during January 1959. Soil frozen a foot deep was overlain by a snow cover. A band of heavy rain fell across central Ohio on the headwaters of many of the state's largest rivers, causing the snow to melt and, with frozen ground, nearly all of the water poured into streams.

The ones that survive are the ones that find shelter and warmth. Remember as your loading up your car or your back pack for a day trip. Be prepared for survival, your trip can unexpectedly get extended.
