The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquakethat struck San Francisco, California, and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude(Mw) of 7.9; however, other values have been proposed, from 7.7 to as high as 8.25. The main shockepicenteroccurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. The earthquake and resulting fire are remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States.

When my children were growing up, the elementary schools requested that the parents put together a student emergency kit. Ours would always get returned at the end of the year. The student disaster kits sold here last for 5 years. The best chance for their survival is for us to prepare them with a personal survival kit.

During the early morning hours of March 1, 1910,  an avalanche roars down Windy Mountain near Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains, taking with it two Great Northern trains and 96 victims. This is one of the worst train disasters in U.S. history and the worst natural disaster (with the greatest number of fatalities) in Washington.

The personal emergency kit gives you enough time to come up with a plan. Each personal survival kit contains a 3 day supply of food and water, as well as other handy to have items. In the deluxe personal disaster kit, shelter is included. We all know the importance of an emergency survival kit. Think about it now, before you need it.

Also known as the "Big Blow" or the "Freshwater Fury", the Great Lakes Storm of 1913 brought hurricane force winds and blizzard conditions. Over 273 lives were lost. Winter storms are quite common on the Great Lakes because the polar air from the north collides with the warm moist air heading up from the Gulf of Mexico. November is an extremely active month because the water on the Great Lakes is still relatively warm and this can fuel storms. In addition, polar storms become more frequent and intense. The jet stream is more active during the winter it quickly carries storm fronts. In 1913, the typical November gale became a deadly mega storm.

Work on your childrens survival kit or your own personal survival gear and plans now, because nature does not ask if you are prepared. When traveling carry a personal emergency kit kit. To often we here in the news about people that could have survived with some survival supplies.

The Flood of 1913 is known as the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history. Although rivers in Ohio tended to flood every spring, heavy rains in March 1913 exacerbated the flood conditions. Most communities located along rivers in the state experienced flooding, even those that had not had problems in the past. The most severe flooding occurred along the Great Miami River, and the conditions in Dayton were particularly bad.
